What features does an event networking app need?

By the Conferras team · Updated 12 October 2026

Short answer

A good event networking app needs one-link access without an app store download, attendee profiles and a directory, matchmaking, private chat and 1:1 meeting scheduling. On top come the agenda with speakers, push notifications, your own branding, sponsor placements and analytics. Without the networking core, it is a digital programme booklet, not a networking app.

Features for attendees

  • One-link access: join from a link or QR code, in the browser, without an app store download.
  • Profiles: role, company, goals and interests, ideally with a link to LinkedIn so contacts last beyond the event.
  • Attendee directory: search and filter everyone who is attending.
  • Matchmaking: suggestions for whom to meet, ranked by fit. AI matchmaking adds a compatibility score.
  • Private chat: real-time messages with read receipts.
  • 1:1 meetings: book open time slots with conflict checks and reminders.
  • Agenda: sessions, stages and speakers as a list or grid, with bookmarks and calendar export.
  • Saved people and connections: one place for everyone you met or want to meet.

Features for organizers

  • Self-serve setup: a wizard for event name, branding, agenda, speakers and attendees, so the app is live the same day.
  • White-label branding: your event name, logo, accent colour and hero image, in light or dark mode, on your own subdomain. Attendees should see your event, not the vendor's brand. More in our white-label event app guide.
  • Broadcasts and push notifications: a speaker on stage, a room change, the foodcourt opening.
  • Analytics: profiles, matches, messages and meetings, with CSV exports for your report.
  • Access control: decide who can join, and remove someone if needed.
  • Transparent pricing: per event, without annual lock-in. See how much an event app costs.

Features for sponsors and partners

  • Home-screen banner: a placement every attendee sees when they open the app.
  • Sponsor stories: time-limited, Instagram-style stories with videos, offers and links.
  • Sponsored push notifications: a partner message to all attendees at the right moment.
  • Partner profiles and job board: sponsors present their company and open roles.

These placements turn the app from a cost into a revenue line. We explain pricing and packaging in how an event app makes money from sponsors.

Features that are often oversold

Many event platforms advertise long feature lists: floor maps, gamification points, live polls, virtual stages, badge scanning, exhibitor directories. Some events need these. But every extra module makes the app heavier to set up and harder to use, and none of them help attendees meet the right people. Start from the question: what should attendees do in the app? For most conferences, summits and networking events the answer is find people, talk and meet.

Conferras deliberately focuses on that networking layer and does not offer badge scanning, lead retrieval, exhibitor directories or floor maps. If you need those, see our neutral comparison of 10 event networking apps.

Frequently asked questions

Easy access. Matchmaking, chat and meetings only work when most attendees have a profile, and that depends on joining without an app store download.

For small events, a good directory and simple matching are often enough. From a few hundred attendees, AI matchmaking helps because nobody can scan hundreds of profiles. Conferras includes matchmaking on every plan and AI matchmaking from Growth.

Not necessarily. Conferras focuses on networking and runs next to your existing ticketing; attendees get the app link after buying their ticket.
